How Often Should You Lubricate Garage Door Rollers?
Written by David K. (Senior Technician) · 4 min read

Failing to lubricate your garage door is the leading cause of premature spring snaps and opener motor burnouts. Steel joints, bearings, and coils run under intense friction. Without regular lubrication, they bind and rust, leading to loud screeching and mechanical strain.
Recommended Lubrication Frequency
For standard Southern California homes, we recommend lubricating all moving parts **every 6 months**. If you live in coastal areas like Santa Monica or Malibu, increase this to **every 3 to 4 months** to block salt-air rust.
What Sprays to Use and What to Avoid
Never use standard WD-40 or heavy grease on your tracks:
- Avoid WD-40: It is a degreaser, not a lubricant. It dries out bearings and attracts abrasive dust.
- Avoid Heavy Axle Grease: It collects dirt, sand, and hair, forming an abrasive paste that jams rollers.
- Use Dry Silicone Spray: Leaves a slick coating that does not collect dust. Perfect for rollers and springs.
- Use Lithium Grease: Ideal for gate chains and gears.
