Troubleshooting a Garage Door That Reverses Immediately After Touching the Floor
Written by Marcus G. (Opener Specialist) · 5 min read

You press the close button, the door travels down normally, hits the floor, and immediately reverses back open. This is a frustrating issue typically caused by incorrect opener travel limits or bad force settings.
Understanding the Travel Limit Switch
The opener's travel limits tell the motor exactly how far to travel before stopping. If the close limit is set too far down, the door will hit the floor before the motor thinks it should. The opener senses the resistance as an obstacle and reverses to prevent damage. To solve this:
- Locate the limit adjustment screws or digital buttons on the motor unit.
- Turn the close limit screw slightly in the 'up' direction (counterclockwise on most units).
- Test the travel until the door stops resting flat on the floor without reversing.
Checking the Force Settings
If adjusting the travel limit switch doesn't solve the issue, the close force setting may be set too high. Adjust the force dial on the back of the motor unit to fine-tune the sensitivity.
