Under California Senate Bill 969 (SB 969), effective January 1, 2019, all residential garage door openers sold or installed in California must be equipped with a functional battery backup system. This legislation was introduced to ensure that homeowners can evacuate safely during wildfires or power outages.

The Key Facts for Homeowners

Here is what you need to know about SB 969 compliance:

  • Replacement Rule: You do not need to replace a functioning opener installed before 2019. However, if your old opener requires replacement, the new unit MUST be compliant.
  • No DIY Loophole: The law applies to both professional installers and DIY retail sales. Non-compliant openers cannot be sold in California.

Testing Your Backup Battery

To test your opener's backup battery, simply unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Press your remote control to verify the door opens and closes smoothly. The opener will run slightly slower and beep to indicate it is running on battery power.
