Automatic Driveway Gate Safety: Troubleshooting Photo-Eyes & Sensors
Written by Elias K. (Access Systems Engineer) · 6 min read

Automated security gates are massive mechanical structures that pose safety risks if not properly equipped with safety sensors. Safety photocells (photo-eyes) are the primary defense, projecting an infrared beam across your driveway to prevent the gate from closing on vehicles or pedestrians.
Diagnosing Safety Eye Failures
If your driveway gate opens but refuses to close, the safety eyes are likely misaligned, blocked, or damaged.
- Alignment Check: Check the indicator LEDs on both the sending and receiving units. A solid red or green light means they are aligned; a blinking light indicates misalignment.
- Clean the Lenses: Cobwebs, dirt, or moisture on the lens will block the beam. Wipe them down with a microfiber cloth.
- Sun Blinding: Intense morning or afternoon sun shining directly into the receiver lens can blind the sensor. Install protective sun shields over the eyes.
UL 325 Safety Standards
Under UL 325 guidelines, automated gate operators must include monitored safety devices (like photo-eyes or safety edges). If the operator senses a fault in the safety loop, it will lock out to prevent accidents. Regular testing is essential for family safety.
